4.0 out of five stars Epson V300 Scanner, July 16, 2009
By W. Crews Giles (Texas) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: EpsonPerfectionV300PhotoColorScanner(Black) (Office Product) Epson V300 Photo

RATING
I can only give five stars when I have a comparison with my use of another scanner but I strongly suspect such a comparison could not change my opinion of this one. I’m happy, and it exceeds all my expectations. So, four stars and most likely five.

USES
I had two reasons for a scanner: My main function is to preserve long out of print and frequently rare history and theological texts, making them available to other scholars and researchers , it had to be a flatbed. The second was to preserve and share old photos.

Twenty four hours ago I bought this unit, led to this choice by reviews, and deciding established upon the LED scanning technology, the portability, the price and the bundled software. It cost me twenty dollars more (one hundred total) for the V300 which I believe is the same as the V30 except the V300 has the inclusion of the 35mm film and slide holding frame which I think may be of use to me.

MODES
I do not know why they use the terms they do for the modes of use. They ought to be: Photo mode, Text mode, Auto mode and Professional mode. Instead, Photo is called “Home”, Text is called, “Office”, Auto and Professional are what you could think. The menus are otherwise intuitive, but you may be able to (as I did) read the manual if you want.

PHOTOS
I started with photos. 300 dpi resolution is enough for all of my needs, but I tried 1200 to see what it could do. Using 1200 is 400 of original, and using that setting, and zooming in using common photo software, the detail was far beyond my expectations almost like a crime movie zooming in on the subject’s glasses to see the reflection of the photographer. Nearly. This is well beyond my needs, as I’m preserving photos as they are not photoshopping for enhancements. Still.

RESTORATION
I couldn’t resist trying the auto restoration. I began with the default setting of 300 dpi, which I’ll use across the board from now on simply because it’s more than adequate for my uses. I have a black and white family photo from the 1890′s, and I had to view the original under bright light to make out any detail, so faded was it. Seconds afterward, the preview image in “Home” mode” (see above) and leaving the default for “color photo,” showed a perfectly balanced contrast, popping out detail my eye couldn’t detect in the original. Excellent.

I then took a 1941 color portrait, and left the settings in “Home Mode” 300 dpi, and “color restoration” checked. The original’s color has been skewed, nearly no red left over. A push of the button and the image burst out in what I believe must have been the original colors. Excellent.

The last photo test was of a snapshot of me in which the flash had made my skin appear pasty white, while I was really quite tan. I used the Professional Mode and played with the controls removing some red, removing green on the intuitive graph display for that function, and playing with the other controls for not many seconds ensuing in a good last product.

TEXT
Scanning whole books into pdf files is my major use. But I tested more than that.

OLD NEWSPAPWER CLIPPING
My 1st test was really a ninety year old newspaper clipping. Using “Office” mode, I did nothing but preview , then scan. The software did its thing and possibly a minute afterward I had opened the pdf document using acrobat (the free version) and the image was an exact copy. I used the text choose tool in Acrobat to choose the complete article , then pasted it into MS Word. The supplied OCR software (ABBYY FineReader Sprint Plus) had done a just job for a free bundled product and a awful ink speckled original (like all newspaper print in hose days). The pdf file was perfectly readable as it was. The capability to search ad find particular words and phrases could be easily seen in the variant of what I copied from the pdf file , then pasted into Word. The result was good enough to seem right to my eye and brain to read it, but the ink speckle from the original showed up as different characters, and quite some “are enn” showed as “emm” also many other common OCR scanning errors. It was along way from being usable for citing directly perhaps ten minutes of clean up for that one full column of news print.

My second test was old newspaper but preserved in a scrap book. There were four things on the page I tested, and in “Office” mode, I simply selected the four parts of the page that included the real clippings in the preview pane (the selection is easy, fast and called a “marquee.” I could call it a “cropping selection tool.” Then I clicked all, and all four boxes bordering the four clippings were selected. Next, I selected pdf as the output file type from the file folder icon on the major window, , then selected scan. Again, the software did its thing. I received a four page pdf file, a page for each selected item. The results of the image and the OCR test were the same as before.

BOOKS
Finally, I scanned a single page from a old textbook with a rather uncomfortable to read font. Using the same settings as before, the pdf file was perfect, and the OCR work was far better. A proofread and some mistakes on that one page. Still, that’s more editing than I’ll want to do, but that’s a software upgrade not related to the hardware. The software lets you to scan each and all page into a single pdf document if you like, and which I’ll make use of.

OCR SOFTWARE
I am happy with the product, and happy the low end OCR software worked better than I feared as I’ll dont have problem upgrading that software to a professional level for a hundred dollars or so within my budget. For now, from the text, requiring more editing than I’ll want to do, it was, none the less, readable. Our eyes and minds will see thnouglre the eniors and quickly correct as we read! The real density of errors was reasonable for a starter variant which is what is included. Og course the OCR software has nothing to do with the perfect image of the pdf file it only impacts searching that pdf file for particular words and phrases. I’ll add that the capability to search a text using Acrobat that I already have is the same as the scanned pictures on many of the research sites I use. I want the search capability for indexing and hyperlinking inside the last pdf file. I’m told that Adobe’s product will supply that capability and the high OCR accuracy that I need.

OVERALL
There are more features, other software included, but for my reasons. My expectations were far exceeded by what has been delivered a delight to have such easy and fast success. My two unknowns are 1) results of my upgrade to more powerful OCR software, and 2) the longevity of the scanner unit.

I do wish the software could let me to name the current scan more easily. The default is to use serial ordinals, so that my scanning project folder is just img001.Jpg, img002.Jpg, and so on. This leads me to.

SPEED
Speed is an afterthought to me. I have only used this product on my laptop (I needed a movable scanner, and this and my laptop will easily fit together in my backpacking trips to the library). It’s a four year old lap top as of this writing (summer 2009) which is just a bit slow by this year’s standards. I found myself, feeding the scanner with a new original, pressing scan, , then going to the Window Explorer window to change the default name of the last scan to something descriptive, and finishing just as it was time to feed the scanner again. In other words, if the procedure of scanning and saving was any faster then the machine could be waiting on me; I rarely waited on it (except when using OCR that takes some more seconds per page.

POSITIVES
Out of the box, excellent and rewarding results far exceeding expectations.
The inclusion of a starter OCR product was useful, though finally inadequate for my needs just as both vendors (Epson and ABBYY) knew they could be the low end software just to give the customer a taste.
Intuitive hardware and software controls
Resolution capability beyond anything I could ever find use for
Speed easily meeting my needs.
Size and weight make trips to archives with it and the laptop in my backpack possible and easy.
Primary (Epson) software functions well and quickly providing nearly everything I could expect

NEGATIVES
The menu “mode” names are odd and inappropriate.
Some of the terms on the menus are strange in comparison to what I’m used to in photo editing software.
Not “plug and play,” you have to install the software from the supplied CD.
No hard copy user manual (but I was the only one who ever read them anyway)
No capability to custom name each scan file on the fly (no “save file as” pop up window).

Buy it, you will love it. If it lasts a long time, I may name it.

5.0 out of five stars great home scanner, November 25, 2008
By fatmav See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) This review is from: EpsonPerfectionV300PhotoColorScanner(Black) (Office Product)
Buyer review from the Vine™ Program () Over the years I have been through some number of scanners both at work and at home. This Epson V300 is the new home scanner for me.

Speed: Back then a high resolution scanner was like 600dpi and obliged a SCSI connection to move that total of info in reasonable total of time. Thankfully, these days USB2 is ubiquitous and comparatively quick, so the bottleneck is really not at the connection nor the scanner. Instead, I found that I’m typically CPU bounded because of all the image processing that happens after the data was transfered to my computer. After all, 4800x9600dpi is many of info to go through. So yes, it can give you a slow scanning experience, but it is not the scanner’s problem at all. I also note this scanner use an LED lighting source, the warmup time is about three seconds. This is much shorter than the older CFL scanners that can take a minute or two to warm up.

Scanning quality: This is top notch, particularly given the price. I have seen results from much costly scanners as well as an high end scanner from HP. At 1200dpi, which is a common setting for my workflow, I do not detect any material differences in the pictures, which is a good sign. If anything, the tiny difference is in the optical performance, most probably caused by the covering on the glass that separates the document and the sensor. In specific, I do see a bit more chromatic aberration. But, this is something that may be corrected in software and I believe it’s present in all scanners.

Software: Having been an HP user for so long, I find the Epson Scan utility to be adequate and I really like it better than HP’s offering. It has all the features that I expect. Note that I didn’t install the other two included softwares “Arcsoft MediaImpression” and “ABBYY good Reader Spring Plus OCR”. The former I dont have interest, the second one is a lite variant of ABBYY’s commercial OCR product. I happen to have another OCR solution at my disposal and so I skipped this up sell offering also. Note that I’m a Windows user and so I can not speak for the Mac side of the story.

Overall, I’m positively impressed with this scanner. If this is your 1st scanner, I do not see anything that can go wrong.

4.0 out of five stars Say goodbye to “Scanner Warming Up”!, December 17, 2008
By Kevin Nicholls “jaded, maturing hipster” (Milford, MI) See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME) This review is from: EpsonPerfectionV300PhotoColorScanner(Black) (Office Product)
Buyer review from the Vine™ Program () Coming from an (admittedly older) Canon LIDE scanner and the scanner in my Canon Pixma MX850 Office All In One Printer, LED scanning is not whiz bang new technology to me. And Truthfully, I was not expecting to put either scanner out to pasture.

But Epson has proven me wrong with the V300.

One of the biggest pains in scanning pictures for me, was waiting for the scanner to warm up, and for the driver to accept that the scanner is warmed up and really let me scan something. With the V300, you tell it to scan, and it just does. I can not stress how surprised I was to find how such a comparatively minor thing made scanning seem like less of a chore.

The quality is excellent, too. Admittedly, my last scanners were intended with basic home use in mind, but, there really is a obvious difference in quality, when I did side by side comparisons at the same resolutions.

Getting the scanner to work with my Mac was not a problem, either. Pop in the disc, run the installer, and connect the scanner. Next thing I knew, Photoshop CS3 was prepared to use it. One thing I really have to say here, is that Epson’s scanner drivers blow Canon’s out of the water, if you ever pay attention to your Mac’s log files. The Epson driver is not constantly spawning messages to the syslog (or just plain breaking) if you use the scanner on a single computer with many users logged in.

The only downside with this (or really any other consumer grade scanner) is that high res scans take a pretty while. Not quite “go to another room and make yourself breakfast” slow, but you surely have time to go get yourself a cup of coffee while you wait for an 8×10″ photo to scan at high res. But, the quality of the scan makes the wait useful.

At this price, and with this kind of speed and quality, you really can not go wrong.

5.0 out of five stars Tiny, amazing mobile scanner!, February 10, 2011
By THATCH “RST” (OHIO) See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) () This review is from: Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100 CLR 600DPI USB Mobile Scanner (PA03610 B005) (Office Product) I love the ScanSnap line and have had some number of models. I adopted this product line at my workplace for personal scanners, and we have never had a failure. They are fast, dependable, lasting and this model is no different. I have also owned the model somewhat bigger than this, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603 B005). I could certainly decide this model for the mobile traveling worker.

This is the 1st super mobile Scansnap, and I can not convey how impressed I’m with it! The device is literally about the size of two snickers bars put end to end. It is tiny, feels constructed, and doesn’t require external power. The software installation is fast is easy. It doesn’t come with Adobe Acrobat Full variant, like many of the older models used to include. It doesn’t scan double sided as do many of the other Scansnap devices. If you have used a scansnap this one puts the brakes on and reverses you the paper really feeds in the front and out the back reverse of all Scansnaps. It works just good once you realize what is going on there.

Those couple of drawbacks considered, if you’re a mobile road warrior who needs to scan on the go, (signed paperwork, business cards, receipts, etc.) this is obviously my most favored choice for a mobile scanner. The quality of scans is totally acceptable, and honestly this little device does much better with tiny thin pieces of paper like receipts as in comparison to many of the bigger models that are intended for a whole stack of paper and from time to time will skew a thin tiny receipt sideways and crinkle it up.

My thoughts on this model and the S1300: If you travel and set up at a hotel, temporary office or trade table type environment for some days or all day, or need double sided scanning, the S1300 is a good choice. It is bigger and takes more space if you are flying. If you travel or fly daily, or move from client to client throughout the day and want the smallest lightest choice, this could be my suggested choice. It could be perfect for sales forces, insurance company members, consultants, and others who go from place to place quickly, want minimal bulk, and the capability to scan some papers quickly & easily. If you have to scan small stacks of paper, go with the S1300.

As I continue to have the scanner longer I’ll plan to update the review. But now, the install was easy, the scan quality is good and use is easy, and the device is unbelievably small still feels “not flimsy” and I could not be any more happy with it is functionality and portability. If you have any particular questions or could like some extra feature tested, leave a comment below and I’ll answer you ASAP.

Update: I added a photo of it in my hand for size comparison. It is unbelievably trim!

Update: I have finished my 1st business trip with 13 pages of different sized receipts, full page receipts, baggage fee large receipts, etc. I was able to scan them all in about two minutes. Also, a couple features I did not talk about clearly above: The scanner auto aligns the images you do not have to worry about feeding them through exactly straight. , the software “sits and waits” between receipts you feed through, till you click “finished”. This is a FAR superior software feature to the bigger S1300 because it takes some times to put down & pick up another receipt. The scanner sits patiently and waits for you to feed through as many receipts or pieces of paper as you want, with no urgency.

The scanning went perfectly and I will post some examples of the scans with no personal information on them for example of scan quality. Since I have had the scanner I carry it with me in my backpack every day to & from work and everywhere I travel with my work backpack. Still going strong with no issues.

Update: I newly required to scan many plastic like paper and it did not want to curl upwards to come out of the scanner. I then learned that the back “door” on the scanner can easily be removed so the paper feeds straight through without bending it. Another question, and another problem solved easily.

Update: I discovered that the rear door can be removed so you may be able to scan hard cards like plastic credit cards, membership cards, etc. Right through the unit without bending them at all! Also great for older style hard photos as long as they are not too thick.

5.0 out of five stars Ingenious: The “MacBook Air” of Scanners, March 7, 2011
By Jerome A. Carney “Jerome Alton Carney” (Los Angeles, CA USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100 CLR 600DPI USB Mobile Scanner (PA03610 B005) (Office Product) At last, this road warrior’s arsenal is complete. I have tried many movable scanners over the years Antec, Neat, CardScan but they were generally either slow, producing poor quality scans (Antec, Neat) or they lacked flexibility for scanning a range of document sizes (CardScan).

In the meantime I’d become an enthusiastic fan of Fujitsu’s ScanSnap line, owning two desktop models, one for home and one for work. They performed so well, in fact, that I inevitably postponed all business trip scanning till I got back to the office, but after being out of town for some days a longer, it was still generally a chore I dreaded coming home to.

So the day the S1100 went on sale, I snapped one up now, reviews unread, and luckily my faith in Fujitsu proved to be founded. The new member of the ScanSnap family delivers most of the punch of the desktop models, as well as quality, speed, smart design and brilliantly simple to use software. A couple of features had to be sacrificed to whittle the ScanSnap down to ultraportable size that scans and chargers over a single USB cable, but they make for a reasonable compromise: the S1100 does not perform two sided scans, and there is no multi page feed. For my line of work that means I am still able to procedure about 80 of my scans while I am on the road typically at night, while chilling in front of the TV in my hotel room which gives me a big head start on client follow up and expense report filing. Just like its desktop big brothers, the S1100 is a little paper eating monster, and you may be able to work your way through an unwieldy stack of paper in a amazingly short total of time. The included Evernote integration is just icing on the cake, making uploads, filing, organizing and accessing files over many computers/devices a breeze.

There are two shortcomings with the new ScanSnap that are not exactly deal breakers, but still worth mentioning, though I am still comfy rounding up my recommendation to a 5 star review. A travel case could be largely appreciated, particularly since the S1100 is by its nature bound to use up most of its existence to get tossed around in suitcases. Build quality looks adequate enough, but I am still worried. For now, I have managed to recycle the slip cover case that came with my Neat scanner (so I guess it was not a total waste of a hundred bucks), but I am still looking for something a bit more hard.

The other annoyance is the ridiculously embarrassing business card software that is bundled with the ScanSnap line. I am comfy enough writing code that I managed to slap together a script that imports a PDF scan of business cards into my CardScan software which I never really appreciated just how smart it was till I tried working with its awful, counter intuitive competitors. Fujitsu really needs to track down a business card software that is respectable to be bundled in with the otherwise flawless ScanSnap line, or they should just bury the choice completely, as fast as they can.

5.0 out of five stars A Great Little Scanner, October 8, 2010
By Stoney (Miami, FL) See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) This review is from: Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner (4507B002) (Office Product) SUMMARY
With some caveats, this is a great little scanner. The best part is that it really fits in my Targus computer case WITH my laptop. It weighs only 2 3 pds, and runs off USB power no converter brick to haul around. Scans are sharp and fast. The auto settings work well for almost all common originals (old photos, business letters, receipts, etc.). In spite of many shortcomings, the price and exceptional portability may make this series of scanners the choice for scanning books because books which have to be scanned are frequently non circulating things in libraries or archives.

SHORTCOMINGS
Unfortunately, the specific design of this scanner (and all other LED based scanners) is that (unlike most fat desktop scanners) it can not scan 3D objects. Any part of your document or image which isn’t in complete contact with the glass patten will be blurry. The raised frame raises the edges of any original which doesn’t fit on the glass patten, causing the edges of scans to be blurry. This is especially a problem when scanning books. Nor can you just press down harder that warps the glass causing blurriness elsewhere on the page, and may jam the scanning system. But, these problems can be overcome using the strategies discussed below.

The cover is non removable, which means that you can be out of luck if you have to scan part of a big object. The software is multi layered, confusing, and hard to configure to your best use. Caveat, I have used at least three brands of scanner software, none of which were well intended. From the oddly named “MP Navigator” I propose checking the box, “use the scanner driver” for access to the “Advanced Settings” or better still, scan from your graphics (photo editing) program.

NEVERTHELESS
Even though the frame is a problem, it’s lower (1/16″) and narrower (3/8″) than most other scanners, and scanning books etc. Is LESS of a problem than with most other scanners.

CHOOSING AMONG THE MODELS
The hardware and “Advanced Settings” part of the scanning program of all LiDE models (at least models 90 to 210) appears to be same. The big differences between the models is 1) enhancements in the auto scanning functions, and 2) the rated scanning speed (which is seemingly software controlled). In spite of the statistics, there’s little practical difference in scanning speed between the models. The “slower” models are only somewhat slower, but are quieter. Since I use only the “Advanced Settings” (never the auto settings), the 110 is my preference, despite of price. Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner (4507B002)

The 210 can be best for kids and other users who will never learn how to use the “Advanced Settings”, since it claims to have superior automated scanning. The 210 is somewhat faster. Canon CanoScan LiDE210 Color Image Scanner (4508B002)

If you plan to scan books and if you don’t plan to carry the scanner around much, you may think about a Canon LiDE 700. It has two big benefits. The right edge is really flush with the glass surface (hurrah!!) albeit there’s still an excessively large margin. The cover opens 180 degrees, so you may be able to scan portions of a big object albeit there’s still an “edge problem” for the other three edges. Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Color Image Scanner (3297B002)

SCANNING BOOKS
It is easy to scan books which have at least ” of margin between the print and the spine. Place the right side of the scanner at the edge of a table, so that the book hangs open at 90 degrees when placed on the scanner. Place a average weight over your original (such as a 1″ thick book). If you have to press down with your fingers, press at the edges of the glass area (or better, at the corners), not the center. If you can not quite get in tight enough, place a 1/16″ sheet of inflexible cardboard directly behind each page before scanning it is a ache, but it works.

SCANNING CREASED OR FOLDED ORIGINALS
The bubble “pressure pad” in the cover is a bit too soft to insure that many originals (such as inflexible letters or receipts which have been folded) are pressed sufficiently flat (even with a book over the lid). If you notice this problem, then place a inflexible cardboard sheet (or a thin book) directly over your original, and close the cover.

SCANNING TO A movable COMPUTER
The scanner draws power only when scanning. But, at least with my ThinkPad scanning to a movable running on battery power increases the scanning time by at least 50. Plan on having your movable plugged into an AC outlet if you’re planning to scan more than some pages.

OTHER REVIEWER’S COMPLAINTS AND EASY SOLUTIONS
The auto settings force different restrictions on the maximum selectable resolution, maximum file size etc. Which can all be superceded using the “Advanced Settings”. In spite of the information, it isn’t essential to shut the cover, but it’s needed to avoid bright light from shining into the scanner. I use my black microfiber cleaning cloth (folded) to cover any exposed portions of the glass patten when scanning in a bright room with the cover open. The maximum selectable resolution is 1200dpi. If you want to scan at, say 2400dpi, you must type the value in manually in the resolution window. But, such scans are slow, the files are big, and I have found no real improvement in resolution (detail recorded). The USB cable is almost 5′ long longer than needed for a movable scanner. Longer substitute cables, or extension cables are cheap, <$5 if needed. Do not panic about the scary “unlock the scanner before using” notice in the information. If you attempt to scan with the scanner locked, it’ll tell you, “unlock me”. If just unlock it.

PRODUCING PDF papers
The direct to pdf choice isn’t suggested unless quality is unimportant to you and you’ll only be scanning single pages or short papers to pdf. The reason is that you can not make any corrections to the scanned document. What could happen if you scan a 50 page document, , then oops! page twelve is too dark? You’ve got to rescan the complete document. For best quality and flexibility scan to 1200dpi tif files, change the pictures with your graphics program, , then change (and assemble) the files into a pdf document using Adobe Acrobat (or other pdf editor). Beware that any scan, of text, is an “image” (not real text) and is probably to be downsampled when converting to pdf, unless you exactly disable downsampling. When using a pdf editor to change to pdf, choose “highest quality” OR a particular dpi (1200dpi) OR disable “downsampling”. Perfectly adequate graphics programs and pdf editors are available free if that’s a concern.

OCR
OCR means to change a picture of text to real editable text. Unless you totally need real editable text to copy and put into a document, you don’t want to OCR. Unless the original is perfect and in a big common font, the error rate will be high, and you will loose formatting, graphics, and everything else than text. Usually, a much better solution is to use Adobe Acrobat (or other pdf editor) to add an invisible OCR ed level under the image level. Such a document looks exactly like the original including photos or another graphics. You can not edit such a document, but you may be able to search the document, and copy real text from the document.

OTHER SCANNING alternatives
The “Advanced Settings” offers many alternatives like auto tone, unsharp mask, descreen, dust and scratch reduction, fading correction, grain correction, and others. I recommend AGAINST using ANY of these alternatives, because usually most will degrade your image, you won’t know that it’s degraded, and you dont have control over the degree of sharpening, or color modification, etc. “One size doesn’t fit all”. It’s better to scan with all of the alternatives off, using only the tone curve to change the light and contrast. Then use your graphics program to sharpen, descreen, decrease dust, change color saturation etc. As necessary and you will be able see the changes, and undo mistakes.

GETTING THE BEST SCANS
Admittedly, the auto settings work well under most situation when scanning “typical” originals (and it’s the only part of the annoying scanning program that the Canon geeks make any try at improving). But what happens when the auto settings don’t produce good results? You’re stuck with crappy scans or you must use up half a day learning how to use the “Advanced Settings”. My recommendation use the “Advanced Settings” for routine scans. You will become a scanning wizard in no time far better than any “automatic” program. It only takes some more seconds for fine tuning per scan once you know what you’re doing. You have most likely already learned how to use your graphics programs to enhance your photos why not use those expertise to enhance your documents?

The best scans are made by using the “Advanced Settings”, and setting the tone curve manually, with all of the different alternatives “off”. Pre defining tone curves and other setting for your specific project makes the procedure easier. Unfortunately, you must “summon” your pre defined settings for each scan. Note that you must define things in a specific order, or the defaults reset very annoying.

Don’t count on scanning with the auto or default “Advanced Settings” , then fixing things with your graphics program. “Garbage. Read more ›

5.0 out of five stars Love this scanner!, October 31, 2010
By Gina See all my reviews () This review is from: Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner (4507B002) (Office Product) I scrapbook and transitioned from manual scrapbooking to digital. I had tons of pictures that required to be scanned into my laptop (thousands). We looked at the small picture scanners that scan hundreds of pictures in an hour or so. Decided against them because though fast, the quality of the scans were grainy and you had to use sleeves for the pics. They did not get good reviews and were double the price of this scanner. This was one of the cheaper full sized scanners we found on Amazon, we decided that the Canon name had to be good for the price. IT IS! it’s SO easy to use, nothing complicated at all. The software was easy to load and user friendly. I discovered I could scan many pictures at a time and the software could separate them into their own files so there was no messing around with trying to cut and paste to do multiples at one time. It’s really light weight and basic. The quality of the scans is great, they looked as good as the original picture. I could recommend this scanner to anybody. You typically get what you pay for, but we were more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of this Canon scanner.

5.0 out of five stars Easy to set up, professional results, November 1, 2010
By M. Francis (Los Angeles, CA USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner (4507B002) (Office Product) I newly bought the Canon CanoScan LiDE 110 as a substitute for an older LiDE 30. This LiDE’s most vital features is that it’s matched with all variants of Microsoft Windows, as well as Windows seven 64 bit (the older variant isn’t matched with 64 bit variants of windows) and the fact that it’s powered through the USB 2.0 cable, meaning no power supply to carry around or finding a place to plug in, a plus for use with a notebook computer.

After following the directions for installation, installing the drivers before plugging the scanner into the computer, everything went flawlessly, and the 1st time the scanner has been plugged in, after rebooting, the hardware was found and driver installed.

While this may be used as a stand alone flatbed copier, it may also scan to PDF files right from a button on the front of the scanner, meaning you will not have to have a full shown PDF creation program to create PDF files. A button may also be configured to send a scan straight to your e mail program, though I have not tried this feature.

If you use this scanner in a photo editing program, like Paintshop Pro Photo, or Photoshop, after the driver software loads, I could recommend clicking on the advanced button, as it gives you more control over the details of the scan, which is vital when scanning photos. If you have not used a scanner before, then let me recommend that you choose 600 dpi as your default scanning resolution, instead of the 300 dpi selection you will see the 1st time you use it. Also be aware that jpg files at 600 dpi may be quite big when in color, if you’re scanning a black and white photo or document, you are better off selecting Gray Scale instead of Color. In the advanced mode, changes like DPI and color will show up the next time you use the software. If you use the basic mode, and make changes, this isn’t the case. That is why I generally recommend using this in the advanced mode.

If you are looking for a scanner to scan 50 page papers, this isn’t the scanner to purchase. You need one with an auto sheet feeder, or an All In One with a sheet feeder. This flat bed scanner is best used for scanning photos and books.
